CNR–ISMAR Napoli is the local unit of the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR–ISMAR). The Institute carries out fundamental and applied research in physical, chemical and biological oceanography, as well as marine geology. CNR–ISMAR has long-standing experience in marine and ocean sciences and hosts an extensive heritage of natural collections covering botany, zoology, paleontology and geology, representing a significant resource for the study of marine biodiversity and geodiversity. The CNR–ISMAR Napoli site operates as a key operational unit responsible for ship-based marine research activities within European and national research infrastructures. It provides scientific, technical and operational support for research vessel activities, including the integration and operation of onboard observing systems, coordination of multidisciplinary marine measurements, and support to data acquisition, quality control and dissemination workflows. Through its expertise in marine observations and shipborne instrumentation, CNR–ISMAR Napoli contributes to the provision of services for the marine science community within several research infrastructure frameworks. Within EUROFLEETS, CNR–ISMAR Napoli is responsible for the coordination of EUROFLEETS-related activities in the context of ITINERIS WP5. The site manages: 1. The integration of onboard subsystems (including Ferrybox, IOPs, radiometers, LIDAR, ROV, and salinometers); 2. Supervises data and metadata workflows, supports onboard operations; 3. Contributes to quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures and data ingestion into the Marine Data Store. Through these activities, CNR–ISMAR Napoli supports access to research vessels and associated facilities, enhancing the interoperability and availability of ship-based marine observations. In the framework of the DiSSCo Research Infrastructure, CNR–ISMAR Napoli supplies services for the digitisation, cataloguing and management of marine natural collections, including biological specimens, fossils, sediments and rock samples. These services support metadata standardisation according to FAIR principles and promote data integration and sharing across research infrastructures. CNR–ISMAR Napoli contributes know-how and resources that enable interaction with other RIs, such as LifeWatch ERIC (biodiversity and e-science services), Euro-Argo ERIC (oceanographic observations) and eLTER RI. The CNR–ISMAR provider is registered as a Publisher Institution in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Within DiSSCo, CNR–ISMAR Napoli offers a range of resources and services to support the scientific community in managing, digitising and enhancing natural history collections and associated data. These include: 1. Laboratories and facilities for optical and digital microscopy and image analysis; 2. Services for the digitisation and cataloguing of specimens and metadata; 3. Physical and remote access to collections and institutional repositories; 4. Technical and scientific support for data management, metadata curation and implementation of FAIR standards; 5. Specialised expertise in taxonomy and training activities.
