The IMAA is a key scientific and technological hub for environmental observation research, providing measurement capabilities, technological development, and data validation in support of European climate and environmental monitoring policies. The IMAA plays a significant role in the European research infrastructures ACTRIS and ICOS: For ACTRIS (Aerosol, Cloud and Trace Gas Research Infrastructure): IMAA acts as the national reference center for ground-based atmospheric observations, with specific expertise in optical and microphysical profiling of aerosols and clouds using lidar, radiometric, and remote sensing techniques. The institute manages one of Italy's main atmospheric observatories within the ACTRIS network and contributes to calibration, validation, and standardization activities, ensuring the quality and interoperability of observational data at the European level. For ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System): The IMAA is involved in the observation and analysis of greenhouse gas fluxes and the integration of atmospheric and terrestrial data, contributing to the monitoring of the carbon budget and exchanges between the atmosphere, biosphere, and soil. Its expertise in atmospheric remote sensing and integrated observation techniques supports the quality and consistency of ICOS observations in the Italian and international context.
