CNR–ISMAR Venezia is an operational unit of the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR–ISMAR), which carries out fundamental and applied research in physical, chemical and biological oceanography and marine geology. The Institute has long-standing experience in marine and ocean sciences and hosts an extensive heritage of natural collections spanning botany, zoology, paleontology and geology, representing a significant resource for advancing knowledge of marine biodiversity and geodiversity. CNR–ISMAR Venezia contributes to national and European research infrastructures by providing scientific and technical expertise, laboratory facilities and services supporting high-quality marine research and data production. Within the EUROFLEETS framework, CNR–ISMAR Venezia provides specialised expertise in high-precision measurements of seawater properties, with a particular focus on salinity reference measurements and calibration activities. The unit is responsible for the high-precision salinity calibration subsystem (Autosal 8400B) for the R/V Gaia Blu. Its activities include discrete seawater sample analyses to produce reference salinity values, calibration and quality control of Thermosalinograph (TSG) and CTD systems, maintenance of IAPSO calibration standards, management of calibration logs and metadata, and contribution to technical documentation and data ingestion workflows towards the Marine Data Store. Through these services, CNR–ISMAR Venezia supports harmonised and traceable ship-based ocean observations within EUROFLEETS. In the framework of the DiSSCo Research Infrastructure, CNR–ISMAR Venezia supplies services for the digitisation, cataloguing and management of marine natural collections, including biological specimens, fossils, sediments and rock samples. These activities support metadata standardisation in accordance with FAIR principles and enable data integration and sharing across research infrastructures. CNR–ISMAR Venezia contributes resources and expertise that foster interoperability with other RIs, such as LifeWatch ERIC (biodiversity and e-science services), Euro-Argo ERIC (oceanographic observations) and eLTER RI. The CNR–ISMAR provider is registered as a Publisher Institution in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Within DiSSCo, CNR–ISMAR Venezia offers a portfolio of resources and services to support the scientific community in managing, digitising and enhancing natural history collections and associated data, including: 1. Laboratories and facilities for optical and digital microscopy and image analysis; 2. Services for the digitisation and cataloguing of specimens and metadata; 3. Physical and remote access to collections and institutional repositories; 4. Technical and scientific support for data management, metadata curation and implementation of FAIR standards; 5. Specialised expertise in taxonomy and training activities. Within the DANUBIUS-ERIC framework, CNR–ISMAR serves as the leader of the Modeling Node, one of the four thematic nodes of the infrastructure, and coordinates scientific activities at the national level. The unit is responsible for providing advanced modeling tools, including the SHYFEM model, as well as delivering data and research products in the Supersite area 'Po Delta and Northern Adriatic lagoons'.
