Passo della Morte is located near the village of Forni di Sotto in the province of Udine. Passo della Morte was one of the first sites to be monitored under the ITINERIS project. The site was chosen because the area is subject to frequent rock collapses, which led in recent years to the closure of the tunnel and the subsequent construction of an upstream by-pass. This intervention was not the only one in the area. Cross-slope drainage systems were constructed to limit the presence of water and interstitial pressures in the rock. However, the landslide material, according to recent studies, falling back into the underlying Tagliamento River could cause damming causing further problems downstream.
At the road route leading to forni di Sotto - Udine, there are three ground instabilities that resulted in the construction of a by-pass and various other mitigation works. For the project, some monitoring systems were included for possible rock collapse that could result in damming of the underlying watercourse and consequent formation of a damming lake. The landslide types that are currently surveyed are two areas subject to widespread collapse and overturning (where monitoring systems have been included) and one area subject to rotational/translational sliding (easternmost landslide).
