The N/R Laura Bassi is Italy’s only publicly owned ocean research vessel and the country’s only PC5-class icebreaker. Acquired by OGS in 2019 to replace the historic Explora, it supports Italian and European polar missions. Registered in Trieste and Polar Code certified, it combines cargo and research capabilities, with 800-ton capacity and advanced navigation systems. The ship debuted in the Ross Sea during the 2019–2020 Antarctic expedition. With facilities for oceanographic and geophysical research, it is part of the European Eurofleets program, further supporting international marine science collaboration.
