The Phytoplankton Virtual Research Environment (Phyto VRE) is a collaborative digital platform designed to support both basic and applied research in phytoplankton ecology. It provides tools for the management, analysis, and modelling of the rapidly expanding volumes of phytoplankton data, and facilitates the integration of phytoplankton data with complementary laboratory- and field-based information on the structural and functional properties of phytoplankton and aquatic ecosystems. Developed within an Open Science framework, Phyto VRE promotes data accessibility, harmonisation, interoperability, and reuse in accordance with the FAIR principles, thereby enhancing scientific efficiency and supporting sustainable and reproducible research practices. The Phyto VRE was developed by CNR-IRET and was funded by the EU – Next Generation EU programme (Mission 4, Component 2; CUP B53C22002150006) under Project IR0000032 – ITINERIS – Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System.
